This piece is about the color red—the most intense color of the spectrum. It is the color of blood and fire, and most is commonly associated with heat, activity, passion, and, above all, love. Red is vibrant, stimulating, and exciting; the link to love is strong and universal. My painting, The Color Red, is about that warm love, the loving connection between human and animals, human and nature. Among other things, the scarlet ibis traditionally depicts the relationship between human and nature, and this is the reason I chose this symbolic red bird here.
The sacred ibis was an object of religious veneration in ancient Egypt in the form of the deity Thoth. Having the head of an ibis, he was the protector of knowledge, science, and wisdom. Dealing wisely with the world in which we live is a sign of true friendship with creation. Therefore, in the guise of an ibis, Thoth was also the god of unbreakable friendship. In my painting it is us, personified by a young woman, protecting and cherishing this sacred friendship.
